Explosion Costs 3 Law Enforcement Officers During Property Removal Operation in the Verona Area
A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
Legal Proceedings
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who escaped after the blast was apprehended not long after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene showed the building left as a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.
Property Situation
The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an court order due to debts incurred by the siblings.
Negotiators had been sent to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings triggered the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander told reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our personnel,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the minister stated.
Casualties and Damage
Injured individuals by the blast included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
The official thought the detonation had taken place on a story above the access point and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed Italian media, adding that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
