In excess of 60,000 Run from Sudanese City In the wake of Capture by Rapid Support Forces Militia, UN Says
As stated by the UN refugee agency, more than 60,000 civilians have fled the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, which was captured by the militia RSF recently.
There have been mass executions and crimes against humanity as RSF fighters entered the city after an year-and-a-half encirclement characterized by famine and intense shelling.
The exodus of those running from the violence towards the community of Tawila, approximately 80km (50 miles) west of el-Fasher, had grown in the last several days, as stated by UNHCR spokesperson.
They were telling horrendous accounts of atrocities, including sexual violence, and the humanitarian group was struggling to locate sufficient housing and food for them.
All children was suffering from nutritional deficiencies, she commented.
Estimates suggest that more than 150,000 individuals are still stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the military's final fortress in the western region of Darfur.
The RSF has disputed widespread claims that the deaths in el-Fasher are driven by ethnicity and resemble a practice of the Arab militia groups targeting non-Arab communities.
Yet the paramilitary group has arrested one of its militiamen, Abu Lulu, who has been accused of summary executions.
The organization released video showing the fighter's arrest after verification that he was involved in the killing of numerous non-combatants in the vicinity of el-Fasher.
Digital platform has acknowledged that it has banned the channel connected to Lulu. The status remains unclear whether he had managed the profile in his name.
Sudan was entered a domestic fighting in April 2023 following a intense power struggle began between its military and the Rapid Support Forces.
This has caused a famine and allegations of genocide in the western Sudan.
In excess of 150,000 persons have died in the fighting across the country, and roughly 12 million have left their residences in what the United Nations has called the biggest global humanitarian emergency.
The capture of el-Fasher solidifies the territorial division in the country, with the RSF now in control of the western region and a large portion of neighbouring Kordofan to the southern area, and the military controlling the main city, Khartoum, central and eastern areas along the coastal region.
The opposing sides had been collaborators - taking over together in a coup in 2021 - but fell out over an foreign-endorsed plan to move towards civilian leadership.
