Lando Norris Edges Nearer to Title as Verstappen Secures Las Vegas Grand Prix Victory

Race action

Lando Norris currently holds a thirty point lead over teammate Oscar Piastri with only 58 points up for grabs in the final two races

McLaren's Lando Norris stepped nearer to a maiden world title with second place in the Vegas race following Red Bull's Max Verstappen

Norris now leads fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who ended up fourth after the Mercedes of George Russell, by 30 points going into the second-to-last race in Qatar this coming weekend

The Briton will secure the title in the desert as long as he doesn't surrender over five points to Piastri in Losail, or 17 to Verstappen

The Australian driver, so strong in the first half of the championship, has failed to finish on the podium for six races

"Max had a good race. I made the mistake early on and was too punchy on that opening corner," said Norris

"It remains a good result to secure second. I've got to congratulate Verstappen and Red Bull"

After Qatar, the final race of the season takes place in Abu Dhabi on 7 December

The main developments of among Formula 1's most high-profile races were:

  • Lando Norris maintained his momentum towards the championship despite the victory to Max Verstappen

  • Piastri's challenging performance streak persisted as his title hopes diminish

  • A excellent victory for Verstappen to maintain him in the title fight

  • Recoveries for both Ferrari drivers, following a difficult qualifying, with Lewis Hamilton claiming a single point for tenth place following starting at the rear

Verstappen Remains in Championship Contention

Race start

Verstappen passes Lando Norris at the start after the British driver ran wide at the opening turn

At the start, Norris was faithful to his statement that he was "not present not to take risks" as he battled aggressively to protect his lead from starting first from Max Verstappen

But following an forceful cut in front of Verstappen to head off the Dutchman's attack on the inside, Norris misjudged his braking point and ran deep into the turn

This allowed Verstappen to drive past into the first place while Norris lost second place to George Russell

Through two virtual safety cars for several opening-lap incidents, featuring at the start when Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson collided with Oscar Piastri, Verstappen slowly stamped his authority on the event

Russell undertook an early pit stop for the more durable compound, but Lando Norris and Max Verstappen stayed out

Norris stopped five circuits after the Mercedes and Verstappen ten laps later

The Red Bull driver was could rejoin still in the lead, George Russell having been failed to catch up on the Red Bull even with his newer rubber

Lando Norris rejoined behind Russell from his pit stop but following a several careful circuits to allow his tires to settle, soon reduced his three-point-three second gap to the Mercedes driver and overtook into runner-up position on the thirty-fourth lap

The British driver inquired his race engineer how to manage the remainder of his race, effectively asking whether he should accept second place or attack

He was told to "chase down Max" but it quickly became apparent he had little opportunity. Verstappen was readily able to repel Norris' attacks, and in the closing stages the margin increased substantially as the McLaren car began to suffer a technical issue which has thus far not been defined

Even with losing nearly three seconds a circuit, Lando Norris was able to defend against Russell because of the size of the lead he had established while pursuing Verstappen

The Verstappen's sixth victory of the championship - only one less than the two McLaren drivers - was taken in emphatic style and keeps him in championship contention, at minimum theoretically, even if he needs issues for Norris in both remaining races to pass him

"It remains a big gap, we consistently attempt to optimize everything we've got," Verstappen stated

"In upcoming weekends we will attempt to take victory in the race and by the conclusion of Abu Dhabi we will know where we finish, but I'm very proud of the entire team"

'Frustrating Race' for Oscar Piastri

Piastri started fifth but dropped two positions on the opening lap following being clouted by Liam Lawson, who was soon eliminated of the battle by a broken front wing

He trailed Liam Lawson's team-mate Isack Hadjar for the opening fifteen circuits before overtaking him on the Las Vegas Strip but also out to Leclerc, who he was able to repass during the pit-stop period

The Australian ended up after Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who competed nearly the entire race on hard tyres after stopping during the initial VSC, but was awarded a five-second penalty for a starting procedure violation, which was not immediately obvious on video reviews

"It proved to be a disappointing event from essentially beginning to end in certain respects," Oscar Piastri told BBC Radio 5 Live

Asked about how he would tackle the remaining events, he commented: "Simply try to position myself in the best position I can. I obviously require several of things to favor me at this stage to win, but my only option is ensure I'm in the best position to take advantage if something happens"

Leclerc hung on in sixth place, insufficiently close to benefit from Kimi Antonelli's penalty, while Carlos Sainz fell to seventh at the finish, his Williams car missing the pace to challenge with the top teams in the dry, after his impressive performance to start third in the wet

Hadjar secured eighth ahead of the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg and Hamilton

The seven-time title winner made a flying start, up to thirteenth on the first lap and proceeded to move forwards

He got stuck in a DRS train with a bunch of additional vehicles but was able to use his strong beginning to salvage a championship point after the poorest qualifying session of his career
