McLaren Racing Attributes Crash to Rival Drivers for Team-Mate Crash
A wheel detaches from the McLaren of Norris after he crashed into team-mate Piastri at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
McLaren Formula 1 leaders Zak Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to opposing racers for the crash between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the US GP sprint event.
Piastri, ahead of his teammate in the championship by twenty-two points, bounced into his team-mate after hitting the Hulkenberg.
The collision took both McLaren drivers out of the event, along with the Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.
Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Incident
Zak Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, commented to Sky Sports that some of the driving at the front was "inexperienced", remarking: "Clearly Hulkenberg hit Piastri and he had no reason being where he was."
McLaren F1 team principal Andrea Stella commented: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to compete."
"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience don't act with necessary care. Enter the first corner, ensure you avoid harming other drivers and carry on."
The team clarified that the team principal was pointing to both the Sauber driver and Alonso.
Differing Perspectives on the Incident
Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Damon Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he thought Piastri had not shown enough awareness of the dangers of the opening turn of an F1 race when he chose to cut back to try to overtake his teammate.
Piastri had a stronger launch than Norris and at first challenged on the outer side on the ascending entry to the corner.
However he then cut back in an attempt to get a run on his teammate on the exit, only to hit the Sauber driver.
Driver Reactions After the Collision
The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I did not see what occurred, I tried to move inside on Norris and we were both very far from the corner apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Lando. A shame."
Norris said: "I just got hit, right? I was not at fault. Further back things happened and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers behind just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."
The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the right place on the inner side, but some vehicles came very fast from the outside switching back and then I was there in the center."
The Sauber driver, who had qualified a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the trash. Just messy."
"Oscar turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and exit of Turn One but I cannot vanish."
"I had Fernando challenge on the inner side and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Piastri turned in and the contact was inevitable."
Aftermath and Team Response
The team will analyze the crash with their drivers but not until the event weekend. Both cars needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on Saturday.
The team principal said: "Overall displeased but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."
"Our team holds a competitive place from our performance point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to race, race normally and utilize our performance."
"The points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about mal-intent, just caution. A little more prudence would be beneficial for all involved."
Championship Implications
The sprint event was taken by Red Bull's Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and 33 behind of Norris.
Stella said: "The implication is what the numbers show - we lost eight points with both drivers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two strong drivers. We anticipate just some normal racing."
Verstappen said he was taking the title race race by race.
