They originally drew interest of Peter Wollny in the early nineties when he was documenting the composer's papers at the Royal Library of Belgium.

The musical compositions - the Chaconne in D minor and Chaconne in G minor - were undated and unsigned. Mr Wollny spent the next 30 years working to authenticate the authorship of the pieces.

Landmark Presentation

They were presented at the Thomas Church in the German city, where Bach is interred and where he served as a church musician for 27 years.

The compositions were performed by organist from the Netherlands the renowned organist, who said he was proud to be able to perform them for the first time in 320 years.

He said the pieces were "exceptionally well-crafted" and would be "a valuable resource for modern musicians, as they are also suitable for smaller organs".

Musical Importance

They are considered to have been created early in Bach's career, when he was working as an music instructor in the municipality of the German town in the German region.

The researcher, who is now the leader of the Bach Archive in Leipzig, said they demonstrated several qualities particular to the artist.

"Musically, the compositions also include elements that can be found in the composer's creations from that time, but not in those of different artists," he said.

They are thought to have been transcribed in 1705 by a student of Bach, the historical figure.

At a revealing of the pieces, Mr Wollny said he was "virtually certain that Bach had written the pair of works" and they have now been incorporated into the recognized inventory of his musical output.
