At least 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. More than 80 people were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes erupted when around 2,500 police forces moved in on the morning of the operation. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives said.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

State officials stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Locals have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Rio's police stated over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, in addition to dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The joint operation by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are considered participants in an organization from the Pará state who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.

Larger Framework

Extensive security missions are not uncommon in the South American nation ahead of significant global gatherings in the nation.

The UN climate summit the climate conference is scheduled in the northern city of Belem in November.
