Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Team

England have opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are included in the selected squad, showing there are no doubts about either fast bowler's condition.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.

Ground Conditions Favor Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged several past matches.

In those games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.

Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers remains the probable choice.

Spin Options Considered

Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.

But the coach has chosen to stick with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.

In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
